L-theanine is a unique amino acid found primarily in tea plants (Camellia sinensis) and has been safely used in Japan for decades. It positively affects brain waves and key neurotransmitters involved in mood, focus, and memory. L-theanine enhances the production of dopamine and serotonin and aids in the formation of GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps reduce stress. It also increases brain alpha-wave activity, promoting relaxation, especially in highly stressed individuals.
A Japanese study on university students showed that 200 mg of L-theanine increased brain alpha-waves and induced a relaxed yet alert state without sedation, starting around 40 minutes after ingestion. L-theanine balances neurotransmitter levels, improving mental, emotional, and physical stress-related disturbances.
